I am an attorney who represents parents of children with disabilities, especially in the special education setting. I also work in the employment area helping employees solve work related problems.
I first got involved with special education over twenty years ago when my son showed some problems in first grade. It turned out he had a learning disability. After my experience with my son, I started doing special education law. I also practice law in the area of employment discrimination and I represent people with disabilities. This gives me experience in other areas of disability law that often overlap with special education law. I’ve gone to lots of workshops to learn about how all kinds of disabilities effect kids in school and to learn about the kinds of programs that might help them. Every time I get a new client I learn something new about a disability, about learning and about life. It’s what I like best about my job.
I have litigation experience in sex, race, age, and disability discrimination cases before federal and state courts. I have appeared before Due Process Hearing Panels in special education cases and I am also a Due Process Hearing Officer with the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. I have taught courses at Washington University and other area colleges on discrimination and the First Amendment. I graduated from Washington University School of Law and she has a Masters in Public Health from the University of North Carolina.
As a business journalist for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, I tapped the resources at COE. I also recommended the Website to fellow reporters who were looking for local experts to interview for stories. For a journalist, having a broad array of experts and sources is essential to make the reporting robust and accurate. COE was a quick, easy way of locating just the right specialist, even when I was on deadline. I appreciated having this database of professionals available to make my job easier and my reports more informative.
